AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO,
CALIFORNIA, AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 434
(THE COMPREHENSIVE ZONING ORDINANCE) OF
SAID CITY BY DELETING CERTAIN ITEMS FROM
SECTION 1000 OF ARTICLE 10 OF SAID ORDI-
NANCE; BY ADDING FOUR NEW ITEMS TO SEC-
TION 1100 OF ARTICLE 11 OF SAID ORDINANCE;
AND BY AMENDING SECTION 1516 OF ARTICLE
15 OF SAID ORDINANCE NO. 434, AS AMENDED.
WHEREAS, the City Planning Commission and the City Coun-
cil of the City of E1 Segundo, California, have duly and regularly
processed and held public hearings upon the hereinafter quoted
amendments to Ordinance No. 434 (The Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance)
of the City of E1 Segundo, California, passed and adopted on the
14th day of April, 1954, as amended, pursuant to proceedings in-
stituted by said City Planning Commission; and
WHEREAS, said City Council has now acquired jurisdiction
to adopt this ordinance;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL SE-
GUNDO, CALIFORNIA, DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That said Council does hereby refer to Re-
solution No. 271 of the City Planning Commission of the City of
E1 Segundo, California, adopted on the 27th day of June, 1956,
and to Resolution No. 274 of said Commission, adopted on the 11th
day of July, 1956, full, true and correct copies of which are on
file in the office of the City Clerk of said City, open to public
inspection, and as so on file ire hereby referred to and by this
reference incorporated herein and made a part hereof.
SECTION 2. That said City Council does hereby make the
same findings and determinations with reference to the amendments

hereinafter set forth, as are made by said Planning Commission with
reference thereto in its said Resolutions Nos. 271 and 274.
SECTION 3. That Section 1000 of Article 10 of said Or-
dinance No. 434 shall be and the same is hereby amended by delet-
ing items n(4) ", "(8) ", "(15) ", and "(16)" therefrom.
SECTION 4. That four new items shall be and the same
are hereby added to Section 1100 of Article 11 of said Ordinance
No. 434, and which new items shall read as follows, to wit:
n(6.1) Boat building, except ship building.
"(18.1) Feed and fuel yards.
"(36.1) Sheet metal shops
"(43.1) Tinsmiths."
SECTION 5. That Section 1516 of Article 15 of said Or-
dinance No. 434 shall be and the same is hereby amended so as to
read as follows, to wit:
"SECTION 1516. WALL, FENCE OR HEDGE MAY BE MAIN-
TAINED. In any R Zone, a wall, fence or hedge forty -two
(42) inches in height may be located and maintained on any
part of a lot. On an interior or corner lot a wall, fence
or hedge not more than six (6) feet in height may be lo-
cated anywhere on the lot to the rear of the rear line of
the required front yard. On a reversed corner lot a wall,
fence or hedge not more than six (6) feet in height may be
maintained anywhere on the lot to the rear line of the re-
quired front yard except that on the side street side of
such lot such six (6) foot fence, wall or hedge may not
be located closer to the side street lot line than a dis-
tance representing the depth of the front yard on the ad-
joining lot to the rear. These limitations shall not apply
to chain link fences enclosing school grounds and public
play grounds.
"Where a retaining wall protects a cut below the
natural grade, and is located on the line separating lots

or parcels, such retaining wall may be topped by a fence,
wall or hedge of the same height that would otherwise be
permitted at the location if no retaining wall existed.

"Where a retaining wall contains a fill, the
height of the retaining wall built to retain the fill
shall be considered as contributing to the permissible
height of a fence, solid wall or hedge, provided that in
any event a protective fence or wall not more than forty -
two (42) inches in height may be erected at the top of
the retaining wall, and any portion of such fence above
the six (6) foot maximum height, shall be an open work
fence. An open work fence means a fence in which the com-
ponent solid portions are evenly distributed and consti-
tute not more than sixty per cent (60%) of the total sur-
face area of the face of the fence. (Plate 9)"
SECTION 6. That this ordinance shall become effective
at midnight on the thirtieth day from and after the date of the
final passage and adoption thereof.
SECTION 7. That the City Clerk shall certify to the
passage and adoption of this ordinance; shall cause the same to
be entered in the book of original ordinances of said City;
shall make a minute of the passage and adoption thereof in the
records of the meeting at which the same is passed and adopted;
and shall, within fifteen days after the passage and adoption
thereof, cause the same to be published once in the El Segundo
Herald, a weekly newspaper of general circulation, published and
circulated within said City of El Segundo and which is hereby
designated for that purpose.
