ORDINANCE NO. 75.
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO,
CALIFORZIA, AMENDING SBOTION 81 OF
ORDINANCE NO. 31 OF SAID CITY RELATING
TO THE CONSTRUCTION, ALTMATION, REPAIRING, ry
DEMOLISHING AND MAII[TAINIDTG OF BUILDINGS
AND OTHER STRUCTURES WITHIN SAID C ITY.

The Board of Trustees of the City of El Segundo
do ordain as follows:
SECTION 1. That Section 81 of Ordinance No.31
of the City of El Segundo, California, passed and
adopted on the 20th day of February, A.D.1918, entitled:
"AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA,
REGULATING THE COMMUCTION, ALTERATION, REPAIRING,
DEMOLISHING AND MAINTAINING OF BUILDINGS AND OTHER
STRUCTURES WITHIN SAID CITY, PROP ID ING FOR THE C ONDEK-
NATION OF BUILDINGS AND OTHER STRUCTURES DANGEROUS TO
PROFERTY, LIFE OR LIMB, AND FIXING AND DETERMINING
FIRE LDLITS IN AND FOR SAID CITY," be and the same is
hereby amended so as to read as follows:
"Section 81. Every theatre, opera or moving
picture house shall have main exits in the street
front thereof each of which shall not be less than
five feet wide and proportioned to the seating capacity
as follows: Seating three hundred and fifty•persons
at least two such exits; seating six hundred persons
at least three such exits, and for every additional
one hundred persons or portion thereof to be a000m-
modated in excess of six hundred an aggregate of twenty
inches additional exit width must be allowed. All
dopre of exits or entrances shall open outwardly,
and be hue# to swing in such a manner as not to
become an obstruction in passage or cmrridor, and
no such door shall be closed or looked during the
performances or while the building is open to the
public, unless looked by a self - unlocking system.
In every such building having a seating
capacity of two hundred or over, at least one side
or the rear of such building shall abut upon a
side street, an open alley, or upon a passageway not
less than five feet in width, leading to an open
street or alley, and such passageways, if interior
passageways, when not constructed of masonry shall
have their interiors lined with sheet metal or be
metal lathed and plastered. Into such side streets,
alleys or passageways there shall be provided exith
not less than five Beet in width and proportioned
to the seating capacity as follows: Seating two
hundred and fifty persons or less, one such exit;
•eating over two hundred and fifty persons and not
more than four hundred persons there shall be
- -, two such exits; seating more than four hundred
persons and not more than five hundred persons,
three such exits; and for every additional one hun-
dred persons or portion thereof to be a000mmodated
in excess of five hundred persons, an aggregate of
twenty inches additional width must be provided
in both exits and passageways. Exits opening into
interior passageways shall have no doors but may
be hung with curtains or portieres. Every exit
&hall have over the same and on the auditorium side
the word "Exit," painted in legible letters not lose
than eight inches high, and over each exit there

shall also be a red light on an independent circuit
from all other lights in the building. All courts
and passageways shall be lighted during the performance.
Gradients not to exceed eighteen per cent ebAll be
employed to overcome any difference of level in and
between courts., corridors, lobbies, passageways and
aisles on the ground floor, and the level of corridors,
courts and entrances shall be graded flush to the side-
walk level, and in no case shall the main front entrance
be on a lower level than the sidewalk.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the
passage of this Ordinance and shall cause the same
to be published by one insertion in the E1 Segundo
Herald, a weekly newspaper of generaly circulation
i;rinted, published and circulated within the said City
and which is hereby designated for that purpose.
This Ordinance is an ordinance affecting the
public peace, health and safety of the City of E1
Segundo and the facts constituting its urgency are
that the public assemblies of the City of El Segundo
j require protection from fire and other hazard and the

same shall therefore take effect immediately upon
the final passage and adoption thereof.
