CC RESOLUTION 2426RESOLUTION NO. 2426 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA, URGING LEGISLATION IN THE AREA OF SCHOOL BUS SAFETY REGULATIONS. WHEREAS, the safety and welfare of our school children is unquestionably the prime concern of every citizen in this state; and WHEREAS, safety studies in motor vehicle equipment have shown conclusively that safety belts appreciably reduce the hazard of personal injury to occupants of motor vehicles involved in collisions and other vehicular accidents; and WHEREAS, although legislation has been adopted requiring such safety equipment be installed on private passenger vehicles, no changes have been made to require similar safety equipment on school busses which have the capacity for carrying more than ten times the num- ber of occupants of a private passenger vehicle; and WHEREAS, the cost of requiring such safety equipment as seat belts in school busses is relatively insignificant in comparison with the danger of death and physical injury which could be avoided thereby: NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA, DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That this body urges the adoption of state and federal legislation which would require that seat belts be mandatory safety equipment in busses used primarily for the transportation of school children, also that the bar on the back of the seats be padded for safety. SECTION 2. That this Resolution be forwarded to the Governor of the State of California and the Superintendent of Public Instruction and Director of Education, California State and Federal legislators, the League of California Cities and the Los Angeles City School Board.
