CC RESOLUTION 1954RESOLUTION N0. 1954 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA REQUESTING AND URGING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE SOUTH BAY STATE COLLEGE ON THE PALOS VERDES PENINSULA. WHEREAS, the legislature of the State of California has provided in Assembly Bill No. 20 by Assemblymen Charles E. Chapel and Vincent Thomas and Senate Bill No. 15 by Senator Richard Richards for the establishment of a new state college in the southwest area; and WHEREAS, there are already four universities or colleges located north of Imperial Highway; and WHEREAS, a college should be located in an area which provides an academic and cultural environment which is so essential to the ultimate success and prestige of a college; and WHEREAS, there is available on the Palos Verdes Peninsula one or more suitable sites that meet all the major criteria established for the selection of state colleges; and WHEREAS, the Palos Verdes Peninsula is not suitable or desirable for industrial uses, and the location of a college there would not eliminate from the tax rolls industrial areas where the college might otherwise be located; and WHEREAS, the Palos Verdes Peninsula is uniquely suited for college purposes because of the topography, natural scenic beauty, and environment compatible with college require- ments; and WHEREAS, the area is readily accessible to students from all sections of the South Bay community, with said access to be further improved by the completion of highways presently under construction; and WHEREAS, there is available on the Palos Verdes Peninsula a reservoir of outstanding academic talent in all - 1 - i1 ,s :♦'l �. =.r fields of the arts and sciences which provides an unparalleled opportunity for the new college to form a faculty unmatched by most large universities; and WHEREAS, a college located upon the Palos Verdes Peninsula would possess the environmental advantages essential for the creation of an outstanding cultural and academic center and bring new vitality and opportunities to the citizens of the South Bay area. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA, DOES RESOLVE, FIND, DECLARE AND ORDER AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That it would be in the best interests of the residents of the southwest area of Los Angeles County and the people of the State of California, if a State College were established on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. SECTION 2. The legislature of the State of Califor- nia is hereby respectfully petitioned to allocate funds during its current session for the acquisition in 1961 of a site for such a college on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. SECTION 3. Senator Richard Richards and Assemblymen Charles E. Chapel and Vincent Thomas are hereby lauded and commended for their recognition of the vital need for such an educational facility within the South Bay area. SECTION 4. The City Clerk is authorized and directed to forward certified copies of this Resolution to Senator Richard Richards, Assemblymen Charles E. Chapel and Vincent Thomas. SECTION 5. The City Clerk shall certify to the pass- age and adoption of this resolution; shall enter the same in the book of original resolutions of said city; and shall make a minute of the passage and adoption thereof in the records of - 2 - the proceedings of the City Council of said city in the minutes of the meeting at which the same is passed and adopted.
