A RESOLUTION OF HE BO,�RD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY
OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORiiIA, ADOPTING SPECIFICeTIOUS NO.
5 FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF SEPTIC TANY:S WITHIN THE
S::ID CITY.
Be it resolved by the Board of Trustees of the City
of E1 Segundo, California, that the following specifica-
tions to be known as specifications No. b , for the
construction of septic tanks within the City of E1 Segundo,
be and the same are hereby adopted;
Section 1. All septic tanks constructed hereunder
within the City of E1 Segundo, California, shall be con-
structed in accordance with the plans prepared therefor
by the City Engineer of said City and which are on file
in the office of the City Clerk thereof.
Section 2. All septic tanks ehall be constructed
of brick masonry or concrete.
No work which may be defective in its construction,
or deficient in any of the requirements of these speci-
fications will be con,:idered as acceoted in consequence
of the failure of any officer or inspector of the City
to point out said defects or deficiency during con-
struction, ._nd any imperfect work shall be corrected
whenever discovered, before the final acceptance of
the work.
MATERIALS
Section 3. BRICK MASONRY. .11 brick shall be
hardburned, true to shape intended, and when broken

across and immersed in water for twenty -four hours, no
brick shall show more than fifteen (15) per cent absorption
by weight.
rill brick shall be clean and thoroughly wet immediately
before laying. Each brick shall be lLid with full mortar
joints on its bed, end, and side at one operation. In no
case is slushing or grouting of joints to be allowed, nor
are joints to be made by working in the mortar after brick
are laid.
No brick shall be laid in water c.nd no water shall be
allowed to stand or run upon brick until the mortar has set.
Tl.e brick ,cork shall be well bonded and the joints
between the bricks shall not exceed three eighths (3/8) of
an inch on the inside of structures. All joints on the
inside of structures shall be neatly struck and pointed
where plastering is not called for in the pl ns or speei-
ficat�,'ns.
The surfaces of all brick masonry on the inside of
septic tanks shall be plastered with three eighths (3/8)
of an inch of mortar.
Section 4. MORTAR. All mortar shall be composed
of one (1) part of cement to two (2) parts of sand by
volume.
The cement ,nd sand must be thoroughly mixed dry,
until the mass assumes a uniform color, and then enough
water shall be added to -ive the mixture a proper con-
sistency. Mortar shall be made fresh as needed.
Section 5. S.UTD. All sand must be clean and
sharp, free from oil or organic matter and must not con-
tain more than five (5) per cent by Freight of clay or silt.

Section 6. CFMIE!IT. All cement shall be Portland
cement nd --hall conform to the requirements of t h e
American Society for Testing Materials. It shall be
cement of a well ;r xrn br,,nd _nd shall not have become
unfit for use from moisture or storing too Ion .-.
Section 7. S120NF,. The stone shall be screened
gravel or broken stone and shall be clean, h-rd, durable
rock. It sIia11 range in size from one quarter (1/4)
inch minimum to one and one half (lw)imum dimension.
Section 8. C1) i1 Old, 11L. all concrete shall be
composed of one (1) part cement, two and one h,.lf (2r,)
oarts sand and three and one h if (312) oasts of screened
gravel or broken stone and shall be thoroughly mixed.

placed nd tamadd so as to produce smooth surfaces.

thoroughly cured.
No concrete shall be placed after it has attained
its initial set -nd no re- mixing or re- tempering of
concrete shall be - .11o,wed.
Substantial forms shall be m,-de in which to construct
wll concrete r:ork nd the material for said forms shall be
of such thickness -znd strength as to be unyielding during
the process of placing and tsmping the concrete.
Section 9. PIP::S. All inlet and outlet pipes shall
be of gooA quality, vitrified, salt glazed sewer pipe sound
.nd well burned through their entire thickness, impervious

to moisture, and must give a clear metalic ringing
sound when struck.
All pines shall be lnid on a true grade with
cement mortar joints. The annular space in all
pine joints -hall be completely and carefully filled
with mortar and all joints shall be carefully wiped
on the inside,
Section 10. GESTR=,Z. The entire work shall
be executed -nd finished in a thorough and workmanlike
mwnner.
Section 11. The City Clerk shall certify to
the paesage of this resolution und shall cause the
same to be entered in the Book of Resolutions of the
said City of E1 Segundo and shall cause a minutes of
the passage thereof to be made in the record of the
meeting of the Board of Trustees of said City at
which the same is passed and adopted.
