A EMERGENCY SITUATION WITHIN THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY AND THE CITY OF EL
SEGUNDO.
Interim City Manager updated Council on the emergency situation with the Los Angeles County
area and within the City of El Segundo.
Eric Moore, Fire Department, presented a report on what cities units had been sent out to assist
in, and informed them that one unit had just been sent out to Inglewood.
Ken Putnam, Director of Public Works, informed Council that trash would be picked up by staff
on Friday.
Acting Police Chief Grimmond presented a status report of the situation stating they had
brought in the retired Police Officers from the past five years or less to assist; the target /pattern
appears to be fires; Superintendent Manahan informed them the schools would continue to be
open; the Beach Shuttle would help the School District should it be necessary; no curfew had
been set, and that the Dodger game and other events had been canceled with Los Angeles.
Councilman West questioned whether there would be cable announcements for the City; Acting
Chief Grimmond responded he and the Director of Recreation & Parks would be meeting to
discuss this. Discussion followed regarding cable broadcasting of emergency status for residents.
Council consensus that emus Vmx7. status updates be scrolled and updated by City Manager
Meehan, and to staff it should he Seel it neoeseary.
Rollie Wright, Director of Recreation & Parks, announced that the Hometown Fair had been
canceled; plunge and gym had been closed, and the Little League Baseball Game was still
scheduled but would end by 7 -7:30 pm.
Councilman Switz questioned whether they should leave the Recreation Park lights on; Acting
Chief Grimmond responded they preferred having them off by dusk. Further stating that Alpha
Beta and Thrifty would be closing at dusk.
Councilman West questioned whether RACES was contacted and /or involved; Acting Chief
Grimmond responded that they would be.
Mayor ProTem Wise stated concerns regarding Flak Vest on -hand shortness; Acting Chief
Grimmond responded that they have issued out the old flak vests in order to meet the
requirements, and then commented on the National Guard's assistance. Mayor ProTem Wise
stated that the Flak Vests should be budgeted this time and approved.
Mayor Jacobson stated that all cities have their own Bulletin Board and that El Segundo's was
Channel 22, and then asked Rollie Wright to contact other surrounding cities to see if they would
be scrolling updated emergency information also.
Council consented with the emergentâ–º status called within the Los Angeles County area, and
authorised Interim City Manager Meehan to handle the City's emergency situation as
appropriate.
