A. regular meeting of the City Council of the City of El Segundo,
California, was called to order at 7:00 o'clock P. M. on the above date,
in the Council Chamber of the City Hall of said City, by Peter E. Binder,
Mayor..
ROLL CALL,
Councilmen Present: Gerow, Hesser, Love, Selby and Mayor Binder.
Councilmen Absent: None.
READING OF MINUTES OF PRr'iiIOUS FETING.
The minutes of the regular meeting held on the 10th day of January,
1934, were read. No errors or omissions appearing, it was moved by Councilman
Selby, seconded by 'Councilman Gerow, that the minutes be approved as read.
Carried.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS.
The following communications were read and disposed of as indicated:
SAFEWAY STORES,'INC.,•dated January 12th, 1934, requesting a return
of the unused portion of license fee heretofore paid the City of El Segundo
for an "Off Sale" beer license. On motion of Councilman Gerow, seconded by
Councilman Selby, which carried unanimously, the matter was referred to the
City Attorney for an opinion and report to this Council.
CITY OF MLYW00D, dated January 12th, 1934, inviting the Mayor, Council-
men and other city officials of the City of E1 Segundo to attend the Thirty -
eixth Regular Monthly Meeting of the Las Angeles County League of Municipali-
ties, to be held at Ylaywood, Tjursday, Tanuary 18th, 1934. It was indicated
that Councilmen Gerow, Hesser and Mayor Binder would attend, and by general
consent the communication was ordered filed.
F. A. BAUGEN, dated January 17th, 1934, announcing the organization of
a Southern California League of Municipalities. Ordered filed.
I. W. FLEMING and five others, dated January 12th, 1934, thanking the
Council for its courtesy and promptness in installing a street light in Penn
Street at Sycamore Avenue. Ordered filed.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS.
Mr. Harold Pomeroy, Mayor of Southgate, addressed the Council and urged
its attendance at a meeting of the Los Angeles County League of Municipalities
to be held at Maywood, January 18th, 19349

REPORTS OF STANDRUG COMMITTEES.
REPORTS OF OFFICERS AND SPECIAL COMMZTT.MS.
The City Clerk reported to the Council that the check mriting machine, which-
has been in use in his office for over ten years, has become worn to such an
extent that impressions upon checks are-illegible in many instances. He further
advised that a new machine could be purchased for the sum of $47.50 by trading
in the old machine at a value of $37.50 as part of the purchase price. It was
moved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilmah Gerow, that the City Clerk be
and he is hereby authorized and directed to trade in the used F & E'Bhbck Writer
at present in use in his office, for an allowance of $37.50 upon th9 purchase
price of one new Series 800 B F &'E Check Writer listed at $87.50, Whieh,
after deducting the trade -in allowance hereinbefore mentioned and the discounts
allowed by the manufacturers, shall cost the City of E1 Segundo not to exceed
the sum of $50.00. Carried by the following vote:

The Street Superintendent reported that on January 15th, 1934, at 6.45 o'clock
A. M., one R. Bragg, residing at No. 11300 Freeman Avenue, Inglewood, California,
driving an automobile on E1 Segundo Boulevard, ignored barricades which had been
erected on said Boulevard to prevent the movement of vehicular traf "ic thereon
by reason of repair work being under way in said street, and`that at a point
a_ proximately 700 feet West of Arizona Drive the car was overturned, although
it was not badly damaged; neither was the driver injured.
The City Attorney advised the Council that he had this date received a
certified copy of Decishon No. 26735 before the Railroad Commission of the
State of California, respecting Application No. 19251, entitled: "In the
Latter of the Application of the City of )31 Segundo, California, for permission
to construct a public highway over the right of way of the Pacific Electric
Railway at Arizona Drive and El Segundo Boulevard; and also for permission to
construct a public highway over the right of way of The Atchison, Topeka and
Santa re Railway at Arizona Drive, within the said City of _1 Segundo ", which
said certified copy he-will file with the City Clerk,

In connection with the purchase of for use in the jail of the
City of E1 Segundo, the Chief of Police reported that he had received quotations
from J. Tv. Gilbert Department Store, J. A. Smith and P. S. Cyr. It appearing
that all wool blankets were desired, that Mr. P. S. Cyr had submitted the
lowest price on this quality of merchandise, and that he was present at the
meeting with a sample thereof for examination of the Council, it was moved by
Councilman Selby, seconded by Councilman Dove, that the purchase of eight
all wool blankets for use in the City Jail of the City of El Segundo, at a
cost of not to exceed $22.45, be and the same is hereby authorized. Carried
by the following vote:

Noes: Councilmen None,
Absent: Councilmen None.
The matter of the improvement of a portion of the Coast Highway, within
the City of El Segundo was discussed briefly, terminating in a motion by
councilman Selby, seconded by Councilman Gerow and unanimously carried, that
the City Clerk of the City of E1 Segundo be and he is hereby authorized and
directed to make demand upon the Uounty of Los Angeles for the payment to the
City of El Segundo of the sum of X5,000.00, heretofore allotted by the Board
of Supervisors of said County from "Special Road Improvement Fund 1933 -34,
Supervisorial District No. 4 Undistributed" to the City of E1 Segundo, for the
improvement of the Coast Boulevard from 45th Street to Ballona Avenue, within
the City of E1 Segundo, by paving with asphaltic concrete, and that upon
receipt of the County warrant in payment of said sum, the City Clerk and the
City Treasurer of the City of El Segundo are directed to deposit the sum to the
credit of "County Aid - Coast Boulevard Improvement Fund" for use in connection
with the payment of the costs of material require& in the prosecution of the
work hereinbefore referred to.
