IT. on the above date, in the Council Chamber of the City Hall of said City, by the City Clerk, the L:ayor being absent. Councilman Gerow was unanimously chosen 1-ayor pro -tem, and he immediately assumed the duties of the Mayor. ROLL CALL. Councilmen Present: Krimmel, Love, Selby and Gerow. Councilmen Absent: Binder. READI;:C OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS =, TING. The minutes of the regular meeting held on the 24th day of August, 1928, were read. No errors or omissions appearing, it was moved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilman Krimmel, that the minutes be approved as read. Carried. ;IRITTEN COI.?.:7fi:ICnTIONS. The following communications were read and disposed of as indicated: HEINE-CY.E C0:7STBUCTIOY COIT.U1', dated Au€nst 29th, 1928, requesting permission to erect and operate an asphalt paving plant on property adjacent to the Santa Fe Station in Section 18 within the City of E1 Segundo. moved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilman Selby, that said communication be received and filed, the City Clerk instructed to inform the applicant that the City of E1 Segundo has no ordinance requiring the issuance of a permit for the conduct of such a business within the City of E1 Segundo. Carried. LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA =TICIPALITIES, being its official call to the Thirtieth annual Convention of said League to be held in the City of San Bernardino, October 9th to 13th, 1928. Ordered filed. OPAL COL""IMICATIONS. Mr. 0. C. Dwy informed the Council that he had this date received information to the effect that during the National Air Races to be held at Mines Field, September 8th to 16th, the Pacific Electric Railway Company will run special trains from Los Angeles to E1 Segundo and will discharge its passengers at Main Street and Grand Avenue, and that those going to Mines Field will be transported on Mr. Dwy's busses. The City Clerk reported that pursuant to previous instruction, he had obtained quotations on a tire and tubes for use of the Street Department, said quotations ranging from :10.80 to $11.35, the Standard Battery Shop being the low bidder. Moved by Councilman Krimmel, seconded by Councilman Love, that the City Clerk be and he is hereby authorized to purchase one 30 x 32 Kelly - Springfield Cord Casing, one 30 x 32 Gray Tube, and one 34 x 42 Gray Tube, all for the use of the Street Department, at a cost not to exceed $10.80. Carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Krimmel, Love, Selby and Gerow. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman Binder, The City Clerk reported haviW, obtained prices on lighting the advertising, sign recently erected, close to the corner of Inglewood- Redondo Road and Collingwood Street, Jack Brewer being the low bidder at $61.50. 1241' Moved by Councilman Krimmel, seconded by Councilman Love, that the following resolution be adopted: RESOLVED, that Jack Brewer•be and he is hereby awarded the work of wiring the City's advertising sign at Collingwood Street and Inglewood -- Redondo Road, so that the same may be - electric --.11y lighted at night; in accordance with specifications therefor prepared by the City - Engineer of the City of El Segundo, at a cost-not to exceed $61.50; and BE IT FUR"IMER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk is hereby authorized to arrange with the Southern California Edison Company for the furnishing of electric service at said point. Carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Krimmel,-Love, Selby and Gerow. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman Binder. The Street Superintendent reported that certain parts of the City's grader are badly worn, but that he, believed it to be more economical' to replace the said parts and repair the grader than to purchase a new one. Whereupon it -was moved by Councilman Krimmel, seconded by Councilman Love, that the Street Superintendent be and he is hereby ' authorized to cause the-City of E1-Segundo's grader to be repaired in a first class manner, at a cost not to exceed `$•150.00. Carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Krimr. ^.el, Love, Selby and Gerow. Noes: None: Absent: Councilman Binder.- The Superintendent of the Water Department initiated discussion relative to painting -the City's steel water tank and read to the Council specifications therefor; which he had prepared. The Council, believing that said water tank should be painted, and having approved the specifica- tions therefor prepared by the City Engineer, it was moved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilman Selby. that the City Clerk be acid he is hereby authorized to advertise for bids as required by law fox° the painting of the 100;000 gallon elevated steel tank for the municipal Water Department. Carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Krimmel, Love, Selby and Gerow. Noes: None, Absent: Councilman Binder, Fire Chief McConnell informed the Council that in his opinion, it is very desirable to have a telephone installed adjacent to the inter- section of Collingwood Street and Arizona Drive for emergency use during the National -Air Races at Mines Field in September. This opinion was concurred in by the Chief of Police, who felt that's, permanent telephone installation in the suggested location would be a good thing. Following discussion, it was moved by Councilman Krimmel, seconded by Councilman Selby, that application be made to Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company for the installation of a telephone at a convenient location adjacent to Collingwood Street and Arizona Drive, and that in event such installation cannot be obtained, that a telephone for temporary use during the National Air Races be installed as close to said location as possible. The Superintendent of the :later Department informed the Council that 1lr. C. F. Turner had, on several occasions, sought permission to remove certain abandoned riveted steel water lines of the City of E1 Segundo from portions of streets or rights -of -way in which they are located. After considering the matter from several angles, the Council, by general consent, decided said lines should remain where located. Yoved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilman Krimmel, that certain damaged cement walk at Sewer lump Station No. 1 be replaced by the Street Superintendent of the City of E1 Segundo at a cost not to exceed "125.00. Carried by the following vote: OWN Ayes: Councilmen Krin-mel, Love, Selby and Gerow. Noes: None. Absent: Councilman Binder. Moved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilman Krimmel, that C. Woodyard be and he is hereby granted permission to take his customary annual two weeks vacation beginning Sept. 17th, 1928. Carried. ved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilman Selby, that the employment of Leonard Stuewe as Asst. Athletic Director be terminated as of midnight, August 31st, 1928, and that after said date and until the further order of this Council the said office be abolished. Carried. No further business appearing to be transacted at this meeting, it was moved by Councilman Love, seconded by Councilman Selby, that the meeting adjourn. Carried.
