El Segundo, Cal. January 18, 1922.
A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of El
Segundo, California, was called to order at 7 :30 o'clock P. K. on the
above date in the Council Chamber of the City Hall by William C.
Bryson, President of the Board.
ROIL CALL.
Trustees Present: Binder, Davis, Smiley and Bryson.
Trustees Absent: Rueger.
READING OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS � .STINGS.
The minutes of the regular meeting held on the 11th day of
January, 1922 were read without error or omission being noted and
it was moved by `trustee Davis, seconded by Trustee Smiley, that
they be approved as read. Carried.
The minutes of the adjourned regular meeting held on January
13th, 1922 were read. No errors or omissions appearing, they were
approved upon motion of Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Davis,
which carried.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS.
The following communications were read and disposed of as
indicated:
EL SEGliNDO VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTIaN`1', under date of January
10th, 1922, giving list of names of officers of departments elected
at their last regular meeting. Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded
by Trustee Davis, that the officers elected by the E1 Segundo Volunteer
Fire Department as set out in a letter from the Secretary of said
organization dated January 10th, 1922 and filed with the Board this
date, be and the same are hereby approved. Carried.
111. GRIFFIN, application for permission to cut the curb in front
of his premises at 423 Virginia Street, for the purpose of con-
structing a driveway. Gloved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee
Davis, that K. Griffin be and he is hereby granted permission to out
the curb in front of his premises at No. 423 Virginia Street, for
the purpose of constructing a driveway into said premises, it being
understood that this work shall be prosecuted and completed to the
satisfaction of the Street Superintendent of the City of E1 Segundo.
Carried.
E. S. DONALDSON, Agent, Pacific Electric Railway, advising the
Board that some time in December the Engineering Department of his
company had been complained to by city officials of E1 Segundo in
regard to the unloading of rock and sand on the Pacific Electric
right -of -way on Grand Avenue between Hain Street and Eucalyptus Drive.
The matter was discussed and it appeared that none of the Trustees
knew of any such complaint having been made, nor have they any
desire to complain concerning unloading of rock at the point mentioned
and the Clerk was instructed to advise said company that the alleged
complaint undoubtedly resulted from some misunderstanding.
PETITION FROM JOHN W. POvir.RS and others in re the paving of
Bonita Vista Avenue from Yaple Avenue to Collingwood Street. Moved
by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Binder that the matter be
referred to the City Engineer for estimate and report. Carried
by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Binder, Davis, Smiley and Bryson.
Noes: None.
Absent: Trustee Rueger.

PETITION OF R. T. LINTICUM and others, requesting the in-
stallation of street lights at Walnut Avenue and Eucalyptus Drive,
1.7alnut Avenue and Sheldon Street, Walnut Avenue and Penn Street, Maple
Avenue and Sheldon Street and maple Avenue and Penn Streets. Trustee
Binder suggested that he thought the lights requested would very well
cover the Northeastern section of the city, but that in his opinion
the matter should be referred to a committee to investigate, so that
if other lights are needed in the same vicinity, all might be included
in the one request.to the Southern California Edison Company. Moved
by Trustee-Smiley, seconded by Trustee Davis, that the matter be re-
ferred to the Public Works Committee. Carried.
STANDARD OIL COMPANY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, requesting the use
of all the extra chairs that belong to the City on Friday night,
January 27th, 1922. It was suggested that the park benches belonging
to the city of E1 Segundo could be more easily handled and with less
possibility of breakage. It was moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded
by Trustee Davis, that the Standard Oil Company Athletic Association
be granted permission to use the park benches of the City of E1 Segundo
on Friday night, January 27th, 1922, and all extra chairs which are
available on said date that may be needed in addition to the benches.
Carried.
PETITION OF G. W. E'RICKSON AND OTHERS, requesting that both
sides of Virginia Street from Palm Avenue to Collingwood Street be
taken into Fire District No. 2. Moved by Trustee Binder, seconded by
Trustee Smiley, that this matter be referred to the Public Service
Committee. Carried.
HEALTH OFFICoZ H& -iiOLD A. YOUNG, filed with the Board a report
of his activities for the first year of his employment as Health
Officer. Moved by Trustee Binder, seconded by•Trustee Smiley, that
the report be filed. Carried.
GAMEW&LI FIRE ALALi TELEGRAPH COMPANY, quoting $455.00 as the
price for installation of a fire alarm box on Franklin Avenue approximate-
ly 2200 feet E4st of the 'City Hall. Ordered filed.

ORAL COr"MUNICATIONS.
REPORTS OF STANDING C01MITTEES.
For the Public Works Committee, Trustee Binder reported that he
and Trustee Rueger had investigated the request for a North and South
street in Block 103 as requested by R. T. Linticum at the-last regular
meeting. He stated that this street is in the block which was the
original bone of contention on North and South streets in the acres,
but that there appeared to be a way of solving the difficulty if the
property owners would get together and cooperate, which it appeared
several days ago they would do. However, he has since learned that
there is disagreement in the niatter and it was moved by Trustee Binder,
seconded by Trustee Smiley that action in the matter be postponed
indefinitely. Carried.
Trustee Davis inquired of the Street Superintendent whether or
not he had arranged for a can and rubbish dump. The Street Superinten-
dent stated that Trustee Rueger had made satisfactory verbal arrange-
ments for the same.

Moved by Trustee Binder, seconded by Trustee Davis, that the
demands be allowed and warrants drawn on the General Fund for the
same. Carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Binder, Davis, Smiley and Bryson.

NEW BUSINESS.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Davis, that 1tz City
Attorney ClyydeJoodworth be and he is hereby instructed to enter
protest on behalf of the City of El Segundo against the increase in
passenger rates recently allowed the Pacific Electric Railway Company
and to take whatever action he deems necessary in the premises.
Carried.
Trustee Davis voiced his disapproval of the condition of the vacant
property adjoining the El Segundo Produce Karket. The matter was
discussed and it was moved by Trustee Davis, seconded by Trustee
Smiley that the Health Officer be and he is hereby instructed to take
summary measures to abate the nuisance about the premises of the E1
Segundo Produce Market at the corner of Grand Avenue and Concord
Street. Carried.
Discussion ensued relative to boxes and other debris being piled
upon vacant lots adjoining stores and business houses throughout the
city and it was moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Davis,
that the matter of piling boxes in vacant lots and the accumulation
of inflammable materials upon the same be referred to the Fire Chief
of the City of E1 Segundo for the necessary action. Carried.
No further business appearing to be transacted at this meeting,
it was moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Davis, that the
meeting adjourn. Carried.
