Regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of E1 Segundo
was called to order at 7 :30 o'clock P. Y. on the above date, in the
Council Chamber of the City Hall, by Sydney R. Kartin, President of the
Board.
ROLL CALL.
Trustees present: Smiley, Ward, Work, and Martin.
Trustees absent: Bryson.
READING MINUTES PREVIOUS LMETIliG.
The minutes of the regular meeting held on the 14th day of May, 1919
were read. It appearing that the Clerk had misunderstood the reason for
returning to Yr. 71. 0. Lewis a petition he had presented, as recorded
under "Oral Communications" in the minutes of May 14th, the record was
ordered corrected to show that the petition was retuitned to provide time
in which to get the same in proper form. It was then moved iq Trustee
GJard, seconded by Trustee Smiley, that the minutes of the meeting held
on the 14th day of May, 1919, be approved as corrected. Carried.
The minutes of the adjourned regular meeting held on the 16th day
of May, 1919, were read without error or omission being noted, and it
was moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Ward, that the same be
approved as read. Carried.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS.
Written communications were received from the following:
Pittsburgh- DesMoines Steel Co. urging improvements.
City Attorney's Association of Southern California inviting the
City Officials to be present at a meeting to be held in the Counoil Rooms
of the City of Los Angeles, on Saturday May 24th, 1919, for the purpose
of adopting ways and means of securing a reduction in rates charged by
the Pacific Electric Ry. Co. and opposing a pending application for an
increase in rates.
A petition from John R. Coward and others, requesting the improve-
ment of Whiting Street from Grand to Mariposa.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Work, that the same
be filed. Carried.
ORAL C01,1IUNICATIONS.
Health Officer Davis verbally tendered his resignation as such officer.
Trustees Smiley and Martin expressed the Board's regret at his action and
requested that he reconsider same. He stated that the duties required more
of his time than he was able to devote to the work and that it would be
impossible for him to continue. It w4s then moved by Trustee Smiley, sec-
onded by Trustee Ward, that the resignation of R. F. Davis as Health Officer
be accepted, to take effect June 1st, 1919. Carried.

The City Attorney reported that in the matter of the annexation of Lot
1, Tract 3303, he had learned from the County Clerk that the Board of Super-
visors had taken -0 voraL-le act-or., but that the Board of Trustees could do
nothing in the matter, until an official notification had been received,
which he understood would be sent within a few days.
The Clerk reported that he had obtained a price of $4.50 for two Box-
wood trees for ornamenting the front of -the City Hall; $2.90 per dozen
for cups; $2.85 per doz. for 7" China plates and $4.50 per thousand for
paper plates. moved by Trustee Work, seconded by Trustee Ward, that the
City Clerk be authorized to purchase two pot plants at a cost not to ex-
ceed $10.00 Carried by the following vote:

UNFINISHED BUSINESS.
The Clerk stated that Idr. McKnight of the Southern California Edison
Co. had discovered that a number of the poles it would he necessary to set
in order to install the 16 street lights requested by the Board, would have
to be set in the sidewalk, as in some places the sidewalk and curb were
built together, and he wanted permission to do this, or would entertain any
suggestion in the matter. After discussion, it was moved by Trustee Smiley,
seconded by Trustee Work, that the following resolution be adopted:
RESOLVED that permission be, and the same is hereby granted Southern
California Edison Company to install poles for holding street lighting fix-
tures, through sidewalks, at the locations as designated by the Board of
Trustees, and under the supervision of the Street Superintendent. Carried
by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Smiley, Ward, Work, and Martin.

Absent: Trustee Bryson.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Ward, that Ordinance No.
51, entitled : "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING
ORDINANCE NO. 31 OF SAID CITY, ENTITLED "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL
SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA,REGULATING THE CO14STzUCTION, ALTERATION, REPAIRING,
DMIOLISHING AND MAINTAINING OF BUILDINGS AND OTHER STRUCTURES WITHIN SAID
CITY, PROVIDING FOR THE CONDEM14ATION OF BUILDINGS AND OTHER STRUCTURES,
DANGEROUS TO PROPERTY, LIFE, AND LIMB, AND FIXING AND DETERMINING FIRE
LIMITS IN AND FOR SAID CITY," PASSED AND APPROVED ON THE ZOTH DAY OF FEB-
RUARY, 1918, which was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the
Board, held on the 14th day of May, 1919, be adopted. Carried by the
following tote: Ayes: Trustees Smiley, Ward, Work, and Martin.

Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Work, that Ordinance No.
52, entitled : "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA,AMENDING
ORDINANCE NO. 26 OF SAID CITY, ENTITLED, "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL
SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA, REGULATING THE CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION OF PLUMB-
ING AND HOUSE DRAINAGE AND THE INSTALLATION OF GAS PIPING AND FITTING WITH-
IN SAID CITY, AND PROVIDING FOR THE ISSUING OF PERMITS THEREFOR," PASSED
AND ADOPTED ON THE 19th DAY OF DECEMBER, 1917, which was introduced and read
at a regular meeting of the Board held on the 14th day of May, 1919, be
adopted. Carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Smiley, Ward, Mork,wnd Martin.

Absent: Trustee Bryson.
The Clerk advised that some of the firms who had promised to submit
prices on fire hose had not done so, with the exception of the U. S. Rubber
Co., who quoted from 85 cents to X1.25 per foot, coupled, in 50 foot lengths.
�Io action was taken concerning hose, but the subject provoked discussion
concerning different sized outlets on the fire hydrants, and it was moved
by Trustee rlork, seconded by Trustee Smiley, that the City Clerk commun-
icate with the E1 Segundo Water Co. requesting them to make all fire hy-
drants uniform with 22 inch outlets. Carried.
PAYING BILLS.
The follotiring demands, having had the approval of the Committee on
Finance and Records, were read:

ITEVl BUSINESS.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Work, that Kies Halley .
be granted free use of the Auditorium on the afternoon of June 3rd, 1919.
Carried.
Beloved by Tru -stee :jerk, seconded by Trustee Ward, that Lrs. Beard be
granted free use of the Coun`l roomon the evening of May 24th, 1919.
Carried.
Street Supt. h. R. Gunn applied for his vacation from June 9th,
to June 23rd, 1919. Owing to the absence of Trustee Bryson of the Public
rlorks Co=.ittee, the matter was laved over one week.
The Clerk reported that a pro erty owner had requested that the
street signs on Grand Avenue be stenciled with the names of the streets.
The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee.
No further business appearing, it was moved by Trustee Ward, second-
ed by Trustee Smiley, that the meeting adjourn. Carried.
