Regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of E1 Segundo
was called to order at 7 :30 o'clock P. M. on the above date, president
Rueger being in the chair.
ROLL CALL.
Trustees Present: Coward, Martin, Smiley, Ward and Rueger.
Trustees absent: bone.
READING MINUTES PREVIOUS MEETING.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and no errors or omiss-
ions being noted, it was moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee
Coward, that they be adopted. The motion carried.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS.
Mr. Davis of the American Bobber Mfg. Co. displayed samples of hose
to the Board and quoted prices on the products of his company. The chair
explained to him that a bond election would be held in the near future
and that the Board would not be in a position to purchase hose until after
said election.
WRITTEN COM1UNICATIONS
A letter from the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce extending an invit-
ation to the Municipal Officers of this city to attend the Convention of
the League of California Municipalities, which will be held in Santa Rosa
September 84th to 30th, 1917, was read. MAVBMXKIXMM
A petition from G. L. Stephens and others, requesting the installation
of street lights on certain corners set forth in said petition, was read.
Loved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Ward, that the oommunicat-
ione be pladed on file and the motion carried.

UIFINISHED BUSINESS.
Trustee Ward moved the adoption of Ordinance No. 20, entitled:
"AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO, ESTABLISHING A DATUM PLANE
OR USE FROM WNCH ALL ELEVATIONS WITHIN SAID CITY ARE TO BE MEASURED OR
ESTIMATED ", which was read. Trustee Martin seconded the motion and the
Ordinance was adopted by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Coward, Martin, Smiley, Ward and Rueger.

Trustee Coward moved the adoption of Ordinance No. 21, entitled:
"AN ORDINANCE CALLING AND PROVIDING FOR, AND GIVING NOTICE OF A SPECIAL
ELECTION TO BE HELD IN THE CITY OF EL SEGUNDO. STATE OF CALIFORNIA, ON MON-
DAY, OCTOBER 1, 1917, FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUBMITTING TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS
OF SAID CITY THREE PROPOSITIONS TO INCUR BONDED DEBTS BY SAID CITY•FOR THE
FOLLOWING MUNICIPAL IMPROVMCMS: - (1) FOR THE ACQUISITION ", CONSTRUCTION
AND COMPLETION OF A CITY HALL, AND FIRE STATION; (2) FOR THE ACQUISITION
OF FIRE APPARATUS, AND (3) FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A MACADAM PAVEMENT ON
PORTIONS OF BALLONA AVENUE AND MAIN STREET IN SAID CITY", which was read.
Trustee Ward seconded the motion and the Ordinance was adopted by
the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Coward, Martin, Smiley, Ward and Rueger.

Moved by Trustee Coward, seconded by Trustee Smiley, that the
Demands as approved be allowed and warrants drawn for same. The motion
carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Coward, Martin, Smiley, Ward and Rueger.

New Business.
The "American LaFrance Fire Engine Company, of California ", submitted
to the Board a proposition to furnish the City with one (1) American -
LaFrance Type 12, 105 Horse Power, Double 80 Gallon Motor Driven Chemical
Engine, immediately, for the sum of Five Thousand Three Hundred Seventy
Five and 00 /100 Dollars, F.O.B. oars B1 Segundo, California, subject to the
terms of a lease contract attached to said proposal, which said proposal
is on file with the City Clerk, and designated as "Proposal for furnishing
Fire Apparatus manufactured by Amerioan-LaFranoe Fire Engine Company, Inc."
and dated September let, 1917.
The lease contract having had the approval of the City Attorney,
Trustee Ward moved the adoption of the following resolution:
"WHEREAS, within the past year,- there have occurred within the present
boundaries of the City of E1 Segundo, California, certain disastrous fires
which have occasioned great lose to property and which were a Lwnace to the
public safety of said city, and
WHEREAS, the said city of El Segundo is at the present time without
adequate fire protection and is under a constant menace of disastrous fire
by.reason of the vast amount of combustible materials in storage, and in
use therein,
NOW THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Trustees of the City
of E1 Segundo as follows:
1. That the public interest and necessity demands the immediate furn-
ishing of fire protection for the City of E1 Segundo.
2. That to the end of securing said fire protection immediately, the
proposition of the Americah -La France Fire Engine Company, dated September
let, 1917, for the leasing to the City of E1 Segundo, of the fire apparatus
therein described, submitted to this Board on this date, be and the same is
hereby accepted by and on behalf of the City of El Segundo, California, and
3. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the president of the Board of Trustees
of said city, and City Clerk thereof, be and they are hereby authorized and
directed to execute the lease contract attached to said proposal for the
leasing of said apparatus, upon behalf of said city, according to the terms
of said contract, it appearing to this Board that said fire apparatus is at
present within the present boundaries of the City of E1 Segundo, and is
available for immediate and instant use in case of fire."
The above motion was seconded by Trustee Martin, and the resolution
adopted by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Coward, Martin, Smiley, Ward and Rueger.
Noes: None.
Absent: None.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Coward, that action on the
petition for street lights be laid over until the next meeting. Carried.
Trustee Martin stated that Mr. Scholz wished to obtain permission to
remove two trees from the front of his residence on Concord St., same to
be, replaced with palms. Action deferred to enable the Public Safety
Committee to report at the next meeting.
The Marshal reported, through Trustee Martin, that persons were com-
plaining about the low hanging branches on Eucalyptus trees on Eucalyptus
Drive. Moved by Trustee Martin, seconded by Trustee Smiley, that the Supt.
of Streets investigate the conditions and report at the next meeting,Carried.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Martin, that the meet-
ing adjourn. Carried.
