Re#ular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of E1 Segundo
was called to order in the City Hall at 7 :30 o'clock P. M. on the above
date by President Rueger.
ROLL CALL.
Trustees present: Coward, Martin Smiley and Rueger.
Trustees absent: Ward.
READING MINUTES PREVIOUS MEETING.
The minutes of the previouz meeting were read, no errors or omissions
being noted. Trustee Smiley moved their adoption, the motion being second-
ed by Trustee Martin and duly carried.
WRITTEN COLOUNICATIONS.
From Mayor Woodman of Los Angeles, requesting the cooperation of the
people of this community in a movement on foot to dispense Christmas joy
to the Nation's Defenders.
From the Southern California Edison Company asking the Board to ad-
vertise for axle, and to sell a franchise for the distribution of electric-
ity in E1 Segundo.
It was moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Martin, that the
communications. be filed, and the motion carried.
Oral Communications
Mr. Goldthwaite, Contractor, stated that he was present to keep in
touch with the situation and that he would at the proper time, like to bid
on the erection of the City Hall.
Fire Chief Draggoo stated that he had a"man who would sleep at the
garage at night, to drive the Fire Truck if needed, but that a cot and Blank-
ets would have to be supplied. He requested also, the installation of an
extension bell, stating that at times the attendant at the garage was re-
quired to work outside the building and the present telephone bell is not
sufficiently loud to attract attention. It was then moved by Trustee Smiley,
the motion being seconded by Trustee Martin, that the Public Safety Committee
be allowed to purchase a cot and blankets and to have the necessary telephone
bell extension installed. The motion was adopted by the following vote:
Ages: Trustees Coward, Martin, Smiley and Rueger.
Hoes: None.
Absent: Trustees Ward.
REPORTS OF STANDING COMMITTEES.
Owing to the absence of Mr. McKnight of the Southern California Edison
Company, the Public Service Committee could make no report and the chair
suggested that wqr. McKnight be requested to be present Monday night nest.
Marshal Jackson's report concerning road signs was submitted by Trustee
Martin, the report stating that 20 railroad signs and 6 "Keep to the Right"
signs were needed. It was moved by Trustee Coward, seconded by Trustee
Martin, that the report be accepted and the motion carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Coward, that the com-
munication from Mayor Woodman be turned over to the Chamber of Commerce.
Carried.
Moved by Trustee Smiley, seconded by Trustee Martin, that the Applicat-
ion of the Southern California Edison Company, for a franchise, be referred
to the City Attorney for the preparation of the necessary papers. Carried.

Trustee Coward moved that the demands be allowed and warrants drawn
for same. Trustee Smiley seconded the motion, which carried by the
following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Coward, Martin, Smiley and Rueger.

NEW BUSINESS.
The City Clerk announced that the returns of the election held on
Monday, the first day of October, 1917, had been delivered to him, and
that the same were in his possession with the seals unbroken as when
delivered. I:ioved by Trustee Smiley, that when this meeting adjourns, it
adjourn to Monday, the eighth day of October, 1917, at the hour of 7 :30
o'clock p.m., at which said time the returns of the Special Election
held in this city on the first day of October, 1917 " shall be canvassed
by this Board. Trustee Coward seconded the motion, which carried
by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Coward, Martin, Smiley and I?ueger.
Noes: 150-16.8-, ,
Absent: Ward. �
MOVE
The City Clerk then read a summons in an action brought against the
city of Alhambra et al., by the County of Los Angeles, relative to the
disposal of money in the County Treasurery which was received from fines
upon violators of the Motor Vehicle Act. After short discussion, it was
moved by Trustee Smiley, that the City Attorney file a disclaimer, in the
matter of an action brought by the County of Los Angeles against the
City of Alhambra et al. Trustee Martin seconded this motion, which
carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Coward, L':artin, Smiley and Rueger.
Noes: None.
Absent: Trustee 'Ward.
It was then moved by Trustee Coward, and seconded by Trustee Smiley,
that the City Marshal, from and after this date vigorously enforce the
provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act of the State of California. Carried.
