2024-05-08 DEI SPC AgendaELFSEGUNDO Special Meeting of the City of El Segundo Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee AGENDA MEETING DATE: May 8, 2024 MEETING TIME: 6:00 p.m. MEETING PLACE: El Segundo City Hall Executive Conference Room 350 Main Street El Segundo, CA 90245 The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, with certain statutory exceptions, can only take action upon properly posted and listed agenda items. Unless otherwise noted in the agenda, the public can only comment on City -related business that is within the subject matter jurisdiction of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Members of the public may also provide comments electronically by sending an email to the following address, with a limit of 150 words and accepted up until 30 minutes prior to the meeting: amancinikelsegundo.org in the subject line please state the meeting date and item number. Depending on the volume of communications, the emails will be read to the Committee during public communications. CALL TO ORDER — The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm. B. ROLL CALL Committee Members Present: Emily Atmore, Valerie Green, Lewis Hill, Shad McFadden, Christibelle Villena, City Staff Present: Joaquin Vazquez, Deputy City Attorney Aly Mancini, Recreation, Parks & Library Director C. PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS No public comment. D. PRESENTATIONS E. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES Motion to approve the March 13, 2024 meeting minutes was made by Member Hill and seconded by Member Atmore. DEI Membership The Committee agreed to recommend reducing the number of members from 9 to 7, which will be brought to the City Council for consideration. Motioned by Member Villena, seconded by Member Hill, to recommend reducing the number of DEI members down from 9 to 7. Motion carried 5-0. G. NEW BUSINESS 1. Juneteenth Member Villena discussed how the Juneteenth event this year will occur on June 15, 2024. The event secured a $6,000 grant from the Arts and Culture Committee, and will participate in fundraising to cover additional costs. 2. United Against Hate Week United Against Hate Week will occur September 21-27, 2024. Member Villena recommended meeting with South Bay Coalition to assist in promotion of the event. 3. Hate Crimes Report The Committee reviewed the 2022 Hate Crimes Report, which highlighted the increase in hate crimes for multiple groups within the El Segundo community. H. REPORT OF SUBCOMMITTEES 1 . Data and Resources Team — Met to work on a team plan, and were going to meet with the new Police Chief. 2. City Engagement Team — Discussed keeping the city involved with the Festival of Holidays and United Against Hate Week, and continuing to work on the DEI Community Service Award. 3. Community Relations Team — Discussed the multicultural events in El Segundo. Discussed that the Aerospace Corporations will be preparing panels and events to get students involved in aerospace. I. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMUNICATION — Limited to 5 minutes per member Lewis Hill — Stated his excitement to be back and to be working with the ESUSD members. Valerie Green — Acknowledged how inspiring the DaVinci schools event was, which had a DEI panel with multiple speakers. Christibelle Villena — Stated her excitement to continue the DEI work. Emily Atmore — Stated her excitement to work on creating a plan for DEI and be able to start taking more action. Shad McFadden — Stated his thankfulness for DEI being back together and starting to move their work forward. J. COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON COMMENTS — None K.
