2024-06-18 CC Agenda - Public Communication - Misc. - South Coast AQMD2024-06-18 CC AGENDA PUBLIC COMMUNICATION — MISC. — SOUTH COAST AQMD From: Brandee Keith <bkeith@aqmd.gov> Date: June 14, 2024 at 4:45:08 PM PDT To: ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS <ALLELECTEDOFFICIALS@elsegundo.org> Subject: Written comment submittal for the City Council meeting on 6/18/24 Good afternoon, Ahead of next week's City Council meeting, which I will unfortunately be unable to attend in person, I'd like to share the following updates from our agency, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, with the City Council, staff, and residents of El Segundo, as written public comment. Rule 1146.2 On June 7, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) Governing Board approved updates to a rule (Rule 1146.2) that will require new and existing buildings to transition to zero -emission residential and commercial building water heaters. For the first time ever, natural gas -fired pool heaters, larger water heaters, small commercial water heaters, boilers, and process heaters must meet a zero -emission nitrogen oxides (NOx) standard when replaced. For new buildings, the rule aligns with building standards that currently require zero -emission units. For more information, please visit our website at www.agmd.gov. Air Quality Forecasts Our local AQI (Air Quality Index) is calculated based on common air pollutants including particulate matter (PM2.5 & PM10), ozone (smog), carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide. You can always check your real-time air quality on our website at www.agmd.gov, at the bottom of the home page. See your real-time air quality, check out today's forecast, or tomorrow's, too. You can also sign up for alerts to receive notifications when air quality in your area changes. Wildfire Season is Here! Wildfires can often cause very high air pollution levels that are harmful to your health, even in areas many miles away from the fire. Older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with heart diseases or lung diseases (such as asthma) may be especially sensitive to health risks from wildfire smoke. Protect your health by taking steps Before, During, and After a wildfire to reduce how much pollution you are breathing.
