As a resident of Whiting Street for over 10 years, I have witnessed a number of accidents and many near -accidents at this intersection. Trucks, cars, and RVs parked on Pine often obscure the traffic and create a dangerous situation for drivers on Whiting. Moreover, people on Pine sometimes assume that it's a four-way stop and then pause, which inevitably leads to the people on Whiting starting to go... just as the people on Pine realize it's not a four-way stop! This confusion has only added to the hazardous conditions at this intersection. I understand that you will be considering a request to convert the two-way stop signs into four-way stop signs at your upcoming Council meeting. I wholeheartedly support this proposal and urge you to prioritize the safety of our community by instructing Public Works to install these new signs as soon as possible. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please let me know if you have any questions. I live on Whiting Street and a four way stop would be such a relief for all of us who live in the area. It is difficult to cross Pine with parked cars, sun glare, etc. There are kids on the street as well, riding bikes and scooters. Please consider making this happen so we can all be safe here in our neighborhood. A neighbor alerted me that this intersection is being discussed at the City Counsel meeting on Tuesday. live on Hillcrest Street and drive through this intersection at least twice daily. When going North or South on Whiting and stopping it can be challenging to see traffic traveling East or West. I have many times experienced cars pulling out without seeing me when I have right of way traveling on Pine. I have been honked at quite a few times when stopped at Whiting while trying to be cautious. People seem to zip through this intersection and neighbors have also alerted me of a recent accident there as well. Safety is a priority and I agree with the request to make this a 4-way stop for this reason. Thank you for your time. Given that I live at the end of Hillcrest, I drive through this intersection countless times each day and often times try to avoid it due to some prior near misses I have had with cross traffic that I was unable to see speeding through. Given how narrow our streets are, and the requirement to always be aware, moving over to let people pass, the addition of stop signs to slow drivers through the community is essential. My family and I are quite familiar with this intersection, as we live one block south at the corner of Whiting & Holly. Despite the 4-way stop at our corner, many cars cruise through at reduced speeds without coming to a complete stop. We've even started calling them "pause signs." Still it's better than nothing, which is the current situation at Whiting & Pine. I'm no fan of stop signs and I don't want them at every corner in El Segundo. But our little neighborhood has seen more and more traffic over the years, especially with drivers using Whiting as a "cheat street" to avoid taking Main Street in the mornings and late afternoons / early evenings. The traffic is now heavy enough to warrant a 4-way stop at the corner of Whiting & Pine. It's downright dangerous trying to make a turn from Whiting onto Pine in either direction. Some cars driving on Pine stop completely when they reach this intersection, as they assume it must be a 4-way stop. Meanwhile other cars seem to speed up at this corner, thrilled to see no stop signs on Pine. Meanwhile the cars approaching on Whiting often assume the cars on Pine have a stop sign, and I've seen several "near misses" as cars have screeched their brakes to avoid a collision at this corner. Our neighborhood is a blissful place full of kids walking to school and riding their bikes, seniors taking a stroll, and homeowners walking their pets. Let's not wait until there's a serious accident, or God forbid, a fatality at this intersection. We ask the Council to please do the right thing and help calm down this busy corner. Thank you for reading this and for your consideration. I have been meaning to write this email for awhile and, ironically, this morning I was inches away from t-boning a car going south on Whiting while I was headed east on Pine. The car on Whiting either 1) didn't realize I did not have a stop and/or 2) did not see me coming since visibility on that intersection is so bad. My husband, three children (ages 5 and under) and myself live at Hillcrest and Mariposa. We were delighted when the City turned the corner of Hillcrest and Pine into a 4-way stop a couple years ago. As a parent whose children are constantly on their bikes/scooters/feet walking the dog or going to neighborhood parks, that intersection was a constant source of stress and fear with people driving down Hillcrest at unsafe speeds. Since the 4-way stop has been installed, we have noticed a huge difference in the safety of that corner. To me, the corner of Whiting/Pine is far more dangerous than Hillcrest/Pine ever was. First, when cars are parked on Pine, it is nearly impossible for drivers on Whiting to see oncoming traffic. Second, in the morning and at night when the sun is rising/setting, the visibility is so bad you cannot see pedestrians or crossing traffic. A 4-way stop would force drivers on Pine to slow to a stop rather than blow through that intersection with impaired visibility. Finally, with most other intersections in town being 4-way stops, many people stopping on Whiting do not realize the traffic on Pine does not stop, as evidenced by my close call this morning. It is only a matter of time before a serious car and/or pedestrian accident happens on this corner. I would ask the Council to please make this a 4-way stop. Thank you for your consideration.
