Subject: Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s Legacy
Dear Mayor Boyles, Mayor Pro Tern Pimentel, and Councilmembers Pirsztuk, Giroux, and Baldino,
I write to you as a concerned resident of El Segundo and a member of Sweat Eaultv Alliance (or SEA Change).
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of seeking justice, I write to urge you to give the DEI Committee the resources
they need to pursue their important work.
The resources they need include a budget.
They also need a full team of committee members dedicated to pursuing diversity, equity, and inclusion within our
City. Vacancies should be filled promptly, via a transparent application process, with a reasonable time (at least 10 days)
between the announcement of an open application period and the dates that applications are due, so that all members
of the community have an opportunity to participate. It should go without saying that vacancies should only be filled
with applicants who apply for the vacant position, who are interviewed, and who are then selected. If the Council wants
to change this process, such as to select someone who did not apply to the Committee this round despite multiple
qualified applicants having done so, it should clearly publicize its reasons and its process for doing so. Council should
also take care to select applicants who are committed to seeking racial justice and equity, and making El Segundo a
welcoming place for all who live, work, and visit here. It is counterproductive to appoint committee members who do
not share this mission.
The Committee also needs transparency. The City needs to ensure that DEI Committee meetings are recorded and live -
streamed to the public. Unless there is a law prohibiting it, the Committee should also take public communications via
Zoom, or at least read written public communications outloud during meetings, so all members of the community can
participate. The DEI Committee, possibly more than any other, needs the ability to communicate with the community
(both to listen to the community via public communications and to speak to the community through its
meetings). These meetings should be made as accessible and transparent as possible.
Thank you for your attention to these pressing matters.
Best regards,
Anya Goldstein
