Subject: Public Comment, Case No. 1212-40 (Hyperion Order of Abatement)
My name is Danielle Busse and I live on the east side of El Segundo, near the high school. The number of
days we are inundated with odors coming from Hyperion has increased, not diminished since the
original accident in July 2021. We have been following the request to call both AQMD and now the
Hyperion complaint line for a year and a half. It is simply a game of cat and mouse. Our entire house
and neighborhood fill with the stench of feces (sometimes with the added burning tire or burning poo
smell), we call it in, Hyperion calls us back and says they don't smell anything (how can that possibly be?)
and proceed to tell our community what a great job they are doing. Frankly, the new request to call
Hyperion is an exercise in futility. Hyperion will blame anything and everyone else in the calls and
forums yet AQMD will confirm the violations and you can just take a look at all of the permit violations
and see that the blame is squarely on their inability to maintain the facility. My family is fatigued with
the smells, losing sleep because of the nauseating smell, the multiple calls, waiting around for inspectors
that drive in from Diamond Bar, meeting those inspectors an hour or sometimes two hours later, the
callbacks from Hyperion saying they don't have any issues and it must not be them. I'm so tired of
this. I'm not attending tonight because I cannot listen to Hyperion lie about what is going on in that
facility any longer. I honestly don't know how a person can say what they say to residents with a
straight face.
I'm not going to stop calling in the stench each time but I'm no longer hosting any gatherings in my
backyard and we are frequently running our a/c and hepa filter to live with the stench and with
whatever chemicals Hyperion is pumping out into our community. What is the end game here? This is
not normal and has been getting worse, not better. They claim they don't have filters on hand to
change out, claim their nose -blind operators don't smell anything when they come out into our
community, take down readings from air monitors, etc. This can't be legal.
Growing more and more angrier as the months tick by and Hyperion continues to operate while
violating their permits without any kind of accountability,
Danielle Busse
