Subject: Hyperion (urgent)
Dear City Council members,
I am a resident of the City of El Segundo, and my family and I have been terrorized by Hyperion water reclamation plant
for the past year. As you are well aware, Hyperion has not been operating safely or within legal parameters since at least
July 2021. Since then, my family's lives have been severely impacted, and our health and mental wellbeing suffers daily.
The rancid odors and unknown chemical released daily by Hyperion impacts the entire City, and more specifically enters
my home consistently. My family and I have not been able to enjoy our home and we have no peace. I cannot take my
children (3 and 5 years old) outside to ride bikes, play, or just be children. They are effected even at their preschool (St.
Michael's) so there is no escaping the toxic air. The adverse health effects have been detrimental and have greatly
increased our stress. We cannot sleep at night. I cannot have visitors to my house due to the chemical "cloud", I cannot
open my windows, we have increased energy bills from running the AC and three air purifiers around the clock, I am
limited when I can do laundry, I am limited when and if I can cook (I can't open windows), and the list goes on and on. I
call SCAQMD almost daily, sometimes several times per day, and have to be available to meet them whenever they may
arrive in order to possibly "confirm" the odor. I call Hyperion directly often to get the answer from them that there is
nothing wrong at the plant but they will increase deodorizer to appease me. Our family feels trapped inside a very
expensive house where we pay a lot to live here and it feels the City has buried it's head in the sand. I took my family to
the east coast for two weeks to escape the torture and it was the best two weeks of the past year, just to be able to
breathe fresh air. It made us all sick (physically and metaphorical) to return to being poisoned in our own home. This
past year has made us regret investing in El Segundo.
I implore the City council to do more, faster and more aggressively. There needs to be an independent investigation and
review of the Hyperion treatment plant. Why we are waiting on answers from and trusting LA Sanitation is beyond
rationale. Many residents in the NW section of El Segundo are desperately trying to escape living here. We are worried
about our home values and quality of life, as well as the health effects on us and especially our young children. Please
take action immediately and stop waiting for something to change, because it is not going to unless the City forces it.
Sincerely,
Erin Falati
