Subject: Street Lights For Safety Community Action Project
Dear elected officials of El Segundo,
Our names are Spencer Osborne, Andre Sugden, and Dominic Perfetti. We are eighth -graders at El Segundo
Middle School, and we are contacting you about our 8th-grade community project. We are trying to decrease
the number of traffic accidents on Main Street. Main Street is in the center of town and is a frontage road to the
freeway, an entryway to the high school, and a major part of our town's commercial center. We believe that
pedestrians walking along Main Street should be as safe as possible. Our idea to increase safety is to add
crosswalk lights that would be implemented into the road. In the past, I have noticed them at the intersection of
Grand and Sheldon next to Beach Cities Baseball Academy and Sweetspot Media. Recently though, I have
noticed that the lights don't work anymore and either have been uninstalled or are not being powered on. I
think that these lights were very helpful here as kids and parents are frequently crossing this intersection from
the Teen Center, Rec Park, or Beach Cities. We believe that the implementation of these lights on Main Street
would provide a similar positive effect on pedestrian safety as they had on Grand.
The street lights would work similarly if not the same as the ones that were operating on Grand and Sheldon.
There would be a button or sensor on the intersection that people would press or activate so the lights would
turn on. These lights would shine in the drivers' sightline so they would know that a pedestrian is crossing.
These lights are for streets with stop signs only, and would be similar to stop lights above the street, but for
pedestrian usage. The streets that are a priority for us are all the Main Street intersections without stoplights,
or, if that is too much of a financial burden, the streets surrounding the high school. The intersections with Main
Street without a stoplight are Walnut, Sycamore, Maple, Oak, Pine, Franklin, and El Segundo. Along with all
the intersections on Main Street, we would like to add lights on the intersections around the Highschool which
include Standard and Mariposa, Oak and Eucalyptus, Oak and Sheldon, and Sheldon and Palm.
These lights would decrease the number of accidents and would make the roads safer for everyone. They are
especially useful at night when people are walking without vibrant colored clothing or light -up material. It can
be difficult for drivers to see these pedestrians at night, and as fog builds up frequently in El Segundo, it can be
near impossible for drivers to see anything without their headlights on. In America in 2019, upwards of 6,000
pedestrians died in vehicle crashes, and in 2020, upwards of 6,700 died. As we are two months through 2022,
we think it is apparent that our community is kept safe this year and for years to come. Our project and the
purpose of our project are supported by many people and groups of people in our community, as it is a very
important aspect of keeping our community safe. In recent weeks, there have been multiple incidents of cars
almost hitting pedestrians, and if someone were to be seriously injured or killed, then the council would be held
responsible, as this idea has come of numerous times. As a student, the risk of getting hit while walking along
the sidewalk is frightening, and I don't think it is fair for a student to be worrying about those situations.
As students of El Segundo Middle School, we know that you are very busy with other city affairs, but we kindly
request that you look into our idea on how to keep our students and pedestrians safe. If you choose to contact
us back, you can email us at asugden 26 .esusdstudents.org, sosborne 26@esusdstudents.org, and/or

Regards,
Andre Sugden, Spencer Osborne, and Dominic Perfetti,
