My name is Sarah Porter and I am an El Segundo resident. I am writing in support of the Teen Girl Space project listed in
the Rec Park Assessment Plan (Item D.15). The outdoor teen space in our town —courts, fields, and rinks —are
predominantly used by boys (e.g. studies show skate parks skew 90-95% male). Our teen girls report discomfort in these
spaces. They are also unwanted on the playgrounds, where they are seen as too -big, too -loud invaders. An outdoor park
space designed with teen girls in mind, but open to all teens, would solve these problems, and announce to our entire
teenage population that they are welcome, heard, and appreciated.
Thank you,
Sarah Porter

Subject: Teen Girl Space - please approve!
Dear Mayor Boyles and El Segundo City Council Members,
My name is Melissa McCaverty and I live in El Segundo and have for the past 20 years. I have a 13 year old daughter
and 10 year old (almost 11) twin boys. I am writing in support of the Teen Girl Space project listed in the Rec Park
Assessment Plan (Item D, 15). The outdoor teen space in our town - courts, fields and rinks are predominantly used by
boys (e.g. studies show skate parks skew 90-95% male). Our teen girls report discomfort in these spaces. They are also
unwanted on the playgrounds, where they are seen as "too big."
I often host my daughters friends at our house as a safe place to hang out after school - however - with working from
home it is not always ideal to have a group of teen girls in our home. They often walk to Rite Aid, Starbucks or the 99c
store for something to do - which is sort of boring and unhealthy as it involves purchasing unhealthy foods and sugary
drinks, not to mention expensive.
An outdoor space designed with teen girls in mind, but open to all teens, would solve these problems and announce to our
entire teenage population that they are welcome, heard and appreciated.
Please provide our teen girls, and any teen, regardless of gender identity, who do not feel comfortable in our current
spaces, a new option.
Thank you,
Melissa McCaverty
