I support the DEI Committee and its commitment to make El Segundo a more welcoming place for all. I am, however, deeply concerned about ongoing remarks from DEI Member Steven Wood regarding his denial of systemic racism, and his recent harmful comments toward transgender athletes. I’m pleased to see that the DEI as a whole does not share these same viewpoints, but I am concerned for those in these often marginalized groups that there is a committee member actively working against their interests in the very committee that was designed to advocate for them. I urge the City to disavow these remarks, reaffirm their commitment to the mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ensure that behavior like that of Mr. Wood will not be tolerated on a DEI Committee. I live here in El Segundo and my children go to school here. I am writing today regarding Steven Wood’s continued anti-inclusive behavior on the DEI Committee. I understand the concept of wanting a diverse set of viewpoints on the Committee and having widely open discussions but having a Committee member in Mr. Wood who continually vocally opposes the Committee’s own stated mission, which includes “inspir[ing] and activat[ing] efforts to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion,” in our City is extremely problematic. How do you think transgender members of our community view our City and its commitment to inclusion when our own DEI Committee includes a member who holds discriminatory views towards them? There must be a line that is drawn to uphold the DEI Committee’s purpose for existing, if “Inclusion” is to actually mean anything here – otherwise, the DEI Committee is a sham. Thank you 1 Molina, Robert From:Weaver, Tracy (City Clerk) Sent:Tuesday, October 19, 2021 5:09 PM To:*ALL CITY CLERKS Subject:FW: Public comment regarding Steven Wood on DEI Committee Follow Up Flag:Follow up Flag Status:Completed Council received the email below. The City Council's decision to select Mr. Wood was a transparently cynical one meant to obstruct the DEI's work. Mr. Wood's most recent comments are the latest in a long list of statements confirming his unsuitableness for the committee. Not only should the Council condemn his comments about transgender athletes, Mr. Wood should be asked for his resignation. If he refuses, he should be removed by the City Council immediately. Mr. Wood's presence on the committee is a slap in the face to the other members who actually believe in the mission of the group, and to all El Segundo residents, students and business owners for whom DEI truly matters.
