Subject: Air Monitoring System
To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Katina Wong, I have been a resident in El Segundo since 1970.
The July 11 Hyperion incident was an extraordinary one which brought to light many issues that had not been considered
by the people of El Segundo before.
While the Hyperion said they are at 100% they are still emitting nauseous and toxic odors as seen by the continuation of
issued AQMD citations.
Dr. Michael Levine, who runs the UCLA Health Toxicology Clinic, contacted them about emissions and was told they are
H2S, ammonia, methane, and carbon dioxide.
When asked in what amounts he was referred to AQMD who has no monitoring equipment at the facility.
While the Hyperion wishes to focus on H2S there are a whole slew of other things that are being emitted.
From "Odor from sewer Networks -processes and prediction" presented at the 9th NORDIWA conference on Collection
and Treatment of Wastewater they write "Biological processes in wastewater of sewer networks under anaerobic
conditions result in the production of low molecular and volatile substances." Of the gasses produced only hydrogen
sulfide and ammonia are malodorous. Other odor -producing vapors such as indoles, skatoles, mercaptans, and nitrogen -
bearing organics.
The City of Richmond, CA had an odor evaluation report done regarding the Richmond Water Pollution Control Plant it
listed the following list of compounds in wastewater:
AIIyl Mercaptan
Amyl Mercaptan
Benzyl Mercaptan
Crotyl Mercaptan
Dimethyl Sulfide
Dimethyl
Disulfide
Ethyl Mercaptan
Hydrogen Sulfide
Methyl
Mercaptan
Propyl Mercaptan
Sulfur Dioxide
Tert-butyl
Mercaptan
Thiocresol
Thiophenol
In addition to these are the VOC's such as benzene, toluene, m,p-xylene, o-xylene and isopropyIbenzene
There are also secondary gasses such as Trichloromethane, Dibromochoromethane, Bromodichloromethane, and
Tribomemethane.
Any one or any combination of these substances/compounds can result in the physical effects that are being reported by
the citizens of El Segundo.
These are compounds that the Hyperion has not been forthcoming in sharing with either the public or medical personnel
who are seeking to address the multiple physical issues that are currently being reported.
Even while the Los Angeles Public Health Toxicologist has recommended a comprehensive monitoring
system, Hyperion's focus has been primarily on 1-12S.
We the Citizens, for our health and the health of our children, need You as OUR Representative to stand up and
DEMAND a comprehensive monitoring system be put into place.
Sincerely,
Katina Wong
