I wanted to request that you consider adding to the agenda that you make it illegal to smoke cigarettes in apartment complexes. I've reached out about this ongoing issue before, but no one ever replied. There are endless health benefits to enforcing a new law that ensures cigarette smokers smoke outside away from apartment windows. Smokers that smoke inside their apartments contaminate all of the surrounding apartments. There is an item on tonight's El Segundo City Council meeting agenda during the Committees, Commissions And Board Presentations titled, Smoking Ban in all Outdoor Public Areas and Certain Common/Open Spaces that requests council to provide direction to staff regarding a citywide smoking ban in all outdoor public areas as well as common/open spaces of multi -unit (3 or more) residential complexes. Drew Boyles I Mayor City of El Segundo On Aug 15, 2021, at 21:13, Carmen yadira Acosta <cyadiraacostaa@icloud.com> wrote: Dear Mayor Drew Boyles, I'm concerned about the rapidly escalating amount of toxic secondhand smoke in the air from vaping, marijuana, and cigarettes. It's practically everywhere like in places such as public parks, restaurant patios, shopping centers, transit stops, recreational faciliites, and sidewalks. The problem is only getting worse in large part to the rise of vaping and marijuana use in California. According to the California Adult Tobacco Survey, e-cigarette secondhand exposure increased more than 65% in two years, and marijuana secondhand smoke nearly doubled! As you may already know, the U.S. Surgeon General has said there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. This is the reason I'd like to encourage you to enact new and stricter smokefree policies in public and private spaces across our community. As a resident of our city, I believe everyone has the right to breathe clean air. Yet I find myself constantly exposed to toxic secondhand smoke. Any exposure can be harmful, especially to children, older adults, and people with a disability. The consequences of secondhand smoke exposure are severe and can lead to fatal health issues such as cancer, stroke, serious respiratory illnesses and heart disease. I'm asking for your leadership in addressing the rise of secondhand smoke in our city. You have my full support to limit the number of places people are allowed to smoke and I encourage the enforcement of such rules. I think we can all agree that it would make our city a healthier, more enjoyable place to call home. Tonight, I represent the ROAD Committee, Reach Out Against Drugs. I have two concerns I'd like to share with you tonight. One, I feel it is very important that we strengthen our existing Tobacco Retailers Licensing Ordinance. We need to add to our ordinance the banning of flavored tobacco products, in order, to promote the health and safety of our children here in El Segundo. Second, while I was attending the El Segundo Car Show and the Art Walk, I was approached by an individual asking me to sign a petition to legalize cannabis stores in El Segundo. Also, a few days later, someone came to my home with the same request, please sign our petition. It is my request that you resist the pull of money when this item comes before you and you vote it down. Cannabis stores in town send the wrong message to our youth. It only serves to legitimize this business further. By you're keeping these stores out of our town, you send the message it is not okay even if it is legal. Thank you for your time and serious consideration Paulette Caudill ROAD Committee
