Subject: Public Comment: Item #14 (Cultural Development Fund)
Dear Council,
In the April 20th agenda packet, I generally support the Cultural Development Fund recommendations by the Arts &
Culture Advisory Committee, but I would like more transparency on IDEA: An After -School Art Program line item for
$10,000. 1 have some questions and the answers aren't very clear. Does the city normally fund after -school programs? it
is not clear what involvement Students for Change and Sweat Equity Alliance have in this partnership. Who is Sweat
Equity Alliance and are we paying this organization? I also do not agree with the partnering with Students for Change (to
be clear, I do support the other four partnerships). The reason being is back in the summer of 2020, Students for Change
submitted their school demands with four main topics and 14 subtopics for equality and diversity in ESUSD (inclusion
was not a part of their demands). I agreed with 86% of the demands, but I did not agree with earmarking jobs for
specific ethnic backgrounds or gender, as that is racist and sexist to discriminate when hiring. I also did not agree with
the demand for a two-year allyship course on sexual gender and orientation, as I see this as a topic for parents to discuss
at home.
Thank you for your leadership.
